Eadem began far from a lab bench. The record shows Ivory Coast and Taiwan in the family histories, then Montreal, Beijing, New York, California, Tokyo and London in the founders lives, and a 2018 blog for women of colour that turned into skincare with a serum launch on May 20, 2021.

Eadem began far from a lab bench. The geography is specific and it matters for the brief.

Marie Kouadio Amouzame and Alice Lin Glover met while working at Google and connected over immigrant parents from Ivory Coast and Taiwan plus frustration with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The project started in 2018 as a lifestyle blog for women of colour, then shifted to skincare and released its first product on May 20, 2021. That unhurried build shapes the claims that follow.

The current line is small and aimed at melanin-rich skin. The stated aim is narrow. Reduce the appearance of dark spots while leaving natural skin color unchanged. The formulas are described as free of bleaching agents and hydroquinone, fragrance free, vegan, cruelty free and non clogging. The shorthand used throughout is brighter not lighter.

The sourcing approach is slower than category norms. Milk Marvel went through 25 iterations with a woman of colour formulator and a dermatologist. Typical development runs about two years, more or less. The team says it builds formulas from scratch instead of buying from a catalog. That decision sets up the evidence questions we press below.

Texture is working structure here, not styling. We wanted a formula that spreads smoothly, layers cleanly, and leaves a soft glow without residue. A milky base lets water loving and oil loving ingredients stay mixed for even application. On damp skin, that amount of 3 to 4 drops spreads farther and feels more comfortable. Then apply moisturiser, then SPF during the morning.

In our independent research we observed visible fading at 14 and 28 days, and 95.2 percent of 50 women with darker skin tones said they would recommend it. That result does not promise that marks disappear in two weeks. It suggests skin may begin to look clearer, more even, and more rested. Papain and bromelain help improve the appearance of texture. Niacinamide plus vitamin C derivative help support radiance with continued use. Apply it twice daily with a light touch, and allow the routine time to act. If skin feels tight afterward, the dose was too high or moisturiser was missed. Three drops will cover most faces adequately.

You describe Milk Marvel as weightless and milky, 30 mL for 68 dollars, with 3 to 4 drops on damp skin morning and night before moisturiser and SPF. Why pair that emulsion type with damp application, and what is realistic in the first two weeks?

I appreciate the focus on vehicle and method, because both alter how a formula behaves. We aimed for a fluid that spreads with little friction, layers without pilling and leaves a soft glow rather than a film. A milky emulsion allowed water loving and oil loving components to distribute evenly. Applied to damp skin, the same 3 to 4 drops cover more area and feel more comfortable. Then we advise moisturiser, plus SPF in the morning.

Our independent research recorded visible fading at 14 and 28 days, and 95.2 percent of 50 women with darker skin tones said they would recommend it. That finding does not show marks disappearing in two weeks. It suggests skin can start to appear clearer, more even and more rested. Papain and bromelain may help soften the appearance of rough buildup. Niacinamide and a vitamin C derivative support the appearance of radiance with continued use. Twice daily use, applied gently, is the tested pattern. A tight feeling often points to too much product or a missed moisturiser step. For most faces, three drops is sufficient.

You developed Milk Marvel through 25 iterations with a woman of colour formulator and dermatologist Dr. Ann Brewer, after founding Eadem as a blog in 2018 and releasing the serum on May 20, 2021. What did early interviews reveal about post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that a standard brief missed?

Thank you for starting with listening, because that shaped the target. Early on, we spoke with countless women of colour and heard the same account repeated. Looking across shelves, it seemed no one was speaking to this concern, or to us, which struck us as strange. Yes, it started with two friends, yet it grew because the need was collective.

Personally, for years I used ingredients like hydroquinone for my hyperpigmentation without understanding the harmful side effects. I assumed effective had to mean harsh. Many of us were shown data from older white users with age spots and asked to map that onto our own faces. When we say melanin-rich, the point is not necessarily skin colour. The point is behavior. It marks, it retains the mark, it requires time to release it.

So PIH became our first target. We asked what a mark requires to fade with less risk. Mild resurfacing, gradual brightening, plus barrier support. We tested on a custom panel because we wanted data on the skin we serve. The work is about locating shared patterns in the experiences and skin needs of women of color, then formulating with care.

Your about page lists Science Meets Soul and More Than One Thing Can Be True, plus three pillars named Proof, Formula, Experience. How do those labels guide a bench choice between a botanical extract and a lab made active?

Thanks for quoting the page closely. We question everything. That line is there intentionally. Science Meets Soul is not a slogan for us. It operates as a method. Proof means testing on the people we formulate for. Formula means building from scratch. Experience means texture, scent and layering all need to feel respectful.

More Than One Thing Can Be True means a botanical extract and a lab made active can share a bottle when each earns its place. Niacinamide supports even looking tone and moisture retention. Encapsulated vitamin C, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, provides antioxidant support with greater steadiness in formula than some forms of pure ascorbic acid. Then we turn to plants for their strengths. Licorice root supports the appearance of brightness. Papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapple may help soften the appearance of rough buildup so skin appears smoother.

We never select a plant only because it is a plant. We select it for its role in the blend, at a level skin can tolerate morning and night.

Labs first asked for 20,000 dollars extra to test on diverse skin tones, so you chose a custom panel. What did that panel alter in Milk Marvel?

Thanks for naming the cost barrier, since it explains the data gap. I would say that 99 percent of people ignore cold emails unless there is a mutual contact. Labs were similar. When we requested diverse panels, the quote rose by 20,000 dollars. That figure shows what passed for normal. With no traditional VC funding, the approach has really been about tinkering and learning what works, rather than spending a million dollars on ads and watching what happens.

The custom panel altered everything. Women with darker skin tones applied the serum as directed, 3 to 4 drops on damp skin, morning and night, followed by moisturiser and SPF. They reported on slip, sting, glow and makeup grip. They noted when a mark appeared softer around day 14 and more even around day 28. Texture and dose came from that feedback. For us, proof means tested where the product will live. Sephora Accelerate guidance on retailing, fulfilment, inventory and finance, plus the 30,000 dollar Glossier Grant for branding and imagery, helped bring that evidence to shelf, first online in September 2021, then into 261 stores by March 2023.

You use the phrase that amber algae, listed as plankton extract, is able to detect excess melanin in production, and only cut that. What should a shopper who fears lightening take from that wording?

Thanks for raising the fear directly, because the history behind it is real. Since women of colour have historically been an afterthought in beauty, we have had to completely break from the norm. That past explains why concern about lightening persists. Many older brightening products relied on bleaching agents. We pledged no hydroquinone and no bleaching agents. Our bundle carries the name Brighter Not Lighter for that reason.

The amber algae can sense surplus melanin during production, and reduce only that. That is how Alice has framed the intent. In practical terms, consider it aimed at the appearance of excess. The formula is intended to fade the look of dark spots and post-acne marks while surrounding skin continues to look like itself. Honokiol and magnolol, the two main compounds in magnolia bark extract that we place under our Smart Melanin Technology term, provide antioxidant and soothing support. Licorice supports bright looking skin. It functions as a chorus, not a bleach.

Our goal is not to alter natural skin color. Our goal is to help a mark rejoin the field.

Proof to us means testing on the people the product is made for.

Cloud Cushion arrived in February 2022 and the pages show a price conflict, 48 dollars on one list and 58 dollars in the title, with plant ceramides, tucuma extract, snow mushroom, tetrapeptide-30 and niacinamide. What role did you assign a moisturiser after an active serum?

Thanks for checking the listing detail, including the mismatch. After Milk Marvel, skin required cushioning, in a literal sense. Cloud Cushion is a 50 mL moisturiser intended to soothe, hydrate deeply and leave skin looking plump and dewy. The serum performs the refining and brightening work. The cream keeps that harvested moisture sealed in.

Plant ceramides help support the moisture barrier so skin appears comfortable rather than stripped. Tucuma extract, derived from a palm fruit, adds emollient softness. Snow mushroom holds water and supplies bouncy slip without heaviness. Tetrapeptide-30 and niacinamide support even looking tone. The texture feels plush and is designed to layer cleanly over 3 to 4 drops of serum.

We often say routines should feel like care, not correction. Use serum, then a soft seal, then SPF in daytime. When the barrier is content, tone can appear improved, because calm hydrated skin reflects light more evenly.

Mami Wata is listed at 100 mL for 44 dollars with cica, ectoin and panthenol, for use through the day even over makeup. Where does a mist fit for stressed, sensitive skin?

Thanks for asking about placement, because mists are often misused. Mami Wata is our rescue mist, named for the water spirit, and formulated for sensitive, stressed days. Cica supports calm looking skin. Ectoin helps skin look hydrated under dry air or office heat. Panthenol supports softness. It offers barrier first support in spray form.

Apply it to clean skin before serum when skin feels tight, or over makeup in the afternoon when the day feels dry. Hold it a hand width away, mist lightly, allow it to settle, then press. It cannot replace moisturiser. It refreshes the skin layer between each step. For skin that flushes easily or feels prickly after cleansing, that midday pause can improve how later steps sit. Store the full size at home and carry the mini in the bag. Small steady watering works better than flooding.

You have said development requires about two years, give or take, and that formulas are built from scratch rather than pulled from a catalog with small tweaks. What makes that route harder, from raw material to stability?

Thanks for distinguishing speed from diligence. We build our formulas from scratch instead of buying them from a catalog with small tweaks. That requires selecting each extract, each level, each pH and texture target. A catalog base moves faster. Building from scratch takes about two years, more or less, because harvests vary and actives interact.

Licorice root shifts with source and cut. Enzymes such as papain and bromelain require care to remain kind. Encapsulated vitamin C requires protection from light and air. Milky emulsions need time to show they will not split. We advance through many iterations, Milk Marvel required 25, because small changes affect spread, glow and comfort.

Made in an FDA approved facility, as reported, provides structure, but the discipline remains ours. We record notes, we test again, we refine. Tinkering over ad spend, always. The path is slower. The result rests better on melanin-rich skin because it was grown for it.

Eadem is Latin for the same or all, and your geography covers Cote dIvoire, France, Montreal, Beijing, New York, California, Tokyo and London. How does that shared root appear now across The Mark, Cashmere Peel and Sunsuede?

Thanks for closing with the name, because it guides the range. Eadem translates as the same, or all. We liked the idea that both meanings could apply. Equal care, for all of us whose skin marks. Same standards, across each formula.

The Mark, at 38 dollars, is our targeted dark spot concentrate with a gel patch texture that remains in place. Where Milk Marvel suits across the face, The Mark places high potency actives exactly where the spot sits. Cashmere Peel, full size 42 dollars and mini 20 dollars, is our milky exfoliant with FastFade support to help reduce the look of clogged pores and refine texture in one sweep. Sunsuede, at 32 dollars, is our suede finish balm stick SPF made in Korea that protects and primes in one swipe.

Different steps, same root. No bleaching agents. Fragrance free where stated. It was tested with our community kept in mind. Brighter, not lighter, from the field to the finish.

Closing note from the desk

What remains is the consistency of the method. Two founders, two backgrounds, one patient routine. Catalog speed was set aside for from scratch blends, standard testing was set aside for custom panels, and heavy ad spend was set aside for tinkering. Botanicals were picked for function, licorice for bright appearance, enzymes for soft refinement, algae and bark compounds for focused support.

Eadem set out to serve melanin-rich skin with plain language about marks. Diminish the spot, preserve the skin. That direct aim, repeated across serum, cream, mist and stick, reflects what the name promises. The same care, for all.
